After putting their son to bed that night, Flynn and Nolan popped some champagne on their back porch as neighbourhood fireworks lit up the sky above their Chicago home. And then it just came to the point where — and any other author who tells you otherwise is lying — it was a book that people read because other people read it.
She turned the script in to Fox on 15 December , and the day after Christmas, director David Fincher — the man behind films such as Fight Club and The Social Network — asked to set up a meeting. Her father taught film and theatre at junior college and her mother was a teacher; they still live in the house where Flynn and her older brother grew up. Entertainment Weekly at the time was awash with Ivy League graduates and a lot of boarding school and a lot of east coast.
It wasn't that I was being outsmarted necessarily, but I just felt different. You've no right to say how lucky for me that I escaped! There's more room to write about it; it's harder to write about New York, because even if you've never been there, you think you know what it's like.
Dark Places was a conscious homage to the book. In those early years of writing, Flynn worked on her fiction after work and on holidays, but found herself going nowhere.
Sharp Objects came out like a tedious essay. They'd talk and talk and talk about female violence. It wasn't working. Flynn had always loved mysteries and saw, suddenly, that that's how she should do it. It was published in to respectable reviews and Flynn got going on Dark Places.
Then she was, unexpectedly, made redundant. It was a difficult time, she says. Flynn was 35, "at that stage where it's tricky to know how to make yourself over again". Like most journalists, she had no other skills.
I was like: I guess I could waitress again. That's the only other job I've ever really had. And so I was about six months waiting to see if I'd get another book contract. And I had thought I was pretty good at my job. I drink my coffee and I stare at the computer screen and listen to a little music to wake up. I usually get obsessed with one song. This was exactly as poignant as it sounds.
I write for a long time, and then I stop. So I may play a round of Ms. Pac-man or Galaga. I rock at both. PL: So you have Johnny Knoxville to thank for your success? GF: I do! I should put him in my acknowledgements. I actually remember coming back from that set one day — obviously a set with a lot of drinking, and being completely goofy in the Florida heat — and writing some really great, dark passages for Sharp Objects.
So who knows where the inspiration came from? Was that a conscientious choice? It was a sort of challenge to myself to switch gears and get my brain to flip over to another kind of writing. It could almost take place any time because no one seems to watch TV or movies or listen to music and I think that was a very specific choice: veering completely away from that world [of pop culture].
PL: Which is strange, because your second book, Dark Places, could only take place in the 80s. PL: And pop culture really affects the characters. GF: The music particularly, and certainly the whole Satanic Panic of the eighties infected and caused so much of what happens in those sections of the book. Part of it was my ode to the eighties, because I was a teenager then, so I was interested in writing about a high school and going back to that time period.
Obviously, thank goodness, I had very different experiences than they did. But I certainly remember rambling in trucks and listening to heavy metal in the eighties, so that part was fun to dig into.
